from the Publisher Mid Hudson H Dan Senkiw PUBLISHER Mid Hudson DANSENKIW@MDNEWS.COM (914) 967-6565 ELLO, AND WELCOME to the August issue of MD News Mid Hudson. Specialty wound care in the Hudson Valley is reaching new heights with the partnering of The Center for Wound Healing, Inc. and Saint Francis Hospital. The alliance combines advanced therapeutic wound healing technolo- gies, expert physicians and a dedicated, comprehensive program to treat burns; diabetic, pressure and venous ulcers; postsurgical wounds; and any wound that fails to heal after more than a week. Innovative solutions to these complex cases are provided by a multidisciplinary team right here in our own community. Also in this issue, we'll look into a matter that many physicians rank among the most pressing on the health care landscape — medical liability reform. According to the American Medical Association, 61% of physicians ages 55 and older has faced at least one lawsuit during their careers, while nine out of 10 surgeons in the same demographic have been sued at least once during their professional lifetimes. Add to that the rising costs of medical liability insurance and defending against a medi- cal liability suit, and the cause for concern is clear. We speak with Christian Shalgian, Director of the Division of Advocacy and Health Policy at the American College of Surgeons, to get his take on current medical liability reform efforts and where he sees them going. As you flip through the pages of this publication, you'll also find pertinent information about medical research and trending topics, in addition to news from the local health care community. My goal is to spark an open dialogue among health care providers through the pages of MD News. Feel free to further the conversation by contacting me.
