R egene Schmier, 94, of Bloomfield Hills, passed away peacefully at her home on Dec. 22, 2016. She and her beloved twin sister, Ruthe, were born to Dorothy and Frank Schefman in Grand Rapids. At the age of 12, she and her family moved to Detroit. After graduating from Central High School, she went on to study at Wayne State University and received her degree in art education. She then taught art in the Detroit Public Schools. Regene married the love of her life, her Sunday school teacher, Leslie R. Schmier. As she put it, "We began populating Detroit with a large family." While raising their seven children, she and Leslie were devoted to their community. They were committed to seeing Temple Israel grow and flourish. Their love of the arts was evident in their support of the Hilberry and Bonstelle theaters at Wayne State University. Regene was also an active member of the scholarship committee for art students at Wayne State. In addition, she wrote annual musical productions for Hadassah fundraisers. She later helped establish the Jewish Ensemble Theater (JET). She was particularly proud of creating and endowing Temple Israel's Schmier Family Concert Series, which welcomes the entire community to enjoy free classical music perfor- mances. Regene began studying piano as a young girl and continued with lessons, daily practicing and recitals until recently. She was also a gifted visual artist. She took her last painting lesson at the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center (BBAC) just a few weeks ago. Above all, her greatest source of pride was the close-knit family she created. Her legacy lives on through her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mrs. Schmier was the wife of the late Leslie R. Schmier. She is survived by her children, Jeffrey (Gabi) Schmier, Robert (Linda) Schmier, Ronny (Ellen) Schmier, Susan (Jerry) Oleshansky, Joann Lillis, Diane (Alan) Levine, Mark (Crystal Kizy) Schmier, Liz Schmier, and Holly Baird.
