Conducted by the Norwich Medical School of the University of East Anglia in the United Kingdom and led by Aedin Cassidy, professor of diet and health at Norwich Medical School, the study utilized data from the Nurses' Health Study. With information spanning 14 years and approximately 69,622 participants, the team looked at how differ- ent flavonoids found in fresh foods could positively affect health. Researchers found that women who consume a high amount of citrus fruit have a 19% lower ischemic stroke risk compared with women who eat less citrus. 14 | Twin Cities MD NEWS ■ MDNEWS.COM CHOLESTEROL-LOWERING MEDICATIONS, SUCH as statins, could have a mood-boosting effect for heart patients, according to a new study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry. Previous research by study leader Mary Whooley, M.D., professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, found that cardiovascular patients who are depressed are less likely to participate in healthy lifestyle changes such as exercise and regular medication intake. In the more recent study, of the 965 San Francisco Bay-area patients surveyed in 12 different outpatient clinics, approximately 65% of the patients took statins. Among the 776 patients who did not present depressive symptoms during a baseline period, a 48% reduction in the odds of being depressed during a six-year follow-up period was linked to statin use. This percentage was reduced to 38% after adjustment for potential cofounders.
