DAVID'S MEDICAL CENTER ACQUIRES ROBOTIC FLUORESCENCE IMAGING TECHNOLOGY Recently, St. David's Medical Center became the first hospital in Central Texas to acquire fluorescence imaging technology with the da Vinci Si Surgical System. This technol- ogy offers the capability of providing real-time, image-guided identification of key anatomical landmarks using near- infrared technology. "This revolutionary fluorescence technol- ogy has the ability to illuminate healthy tissue, allowing for improved surgical precision," says John Marietta, M.D., Chief Medical Officer at St. David's Medical Center. "When performing a tumor-removal procedure, for example, there is a fine line between the areas requiring removal and the healthy portions of an organ. This technology allows us to more precisely differentiate those areas with the flip of a switch, often sparing healthy tissues by leaving them intact." The fluorescence imaging technology's specially designed endoscopes and camera allow physicians to visualize tissue and surrounding blood vessels by injecting a green-colored dye called indocyanine green, which is activated by near-infrared light. This technology allows surgeons to identify malignant and healthy tissue as the procedure is performed. Currently, it is primarily used in urologic and colorectal procedures. SCOTT & WHITE HEALTHCARE TO BREAK GROUND ON NEW CLINIC SPACE IN PFLUGERVILLE In order to better serve the needs of patients and the community, Scott & White Healthcare has announced it will break ground on new clinic space in Pflugerville. Currently, Scott & White has a clinic in Pflugerville located at 1501 Pecan St. The new, 11,800-square-foot clinic (near the inter- section of FM 685 and Pflugerville Parkway) is expected to open in spring of 2013 and will replace the current space. The new clinic will include primary care, extended-hour, physi- cal therapy and specialty services. "By bringing additional services to Pflugerville, we can better serve our patients and bring them the care they need closer to home," says Colleen Sundquist, Regional Administrator for the clinics at Scott & White Healthcare – Round Rock. "When we com- bine primary care physicians, specialty physi- cians and therapists all in one location, it's a win-win for our patients and physicians." The clinic will feature 18 exam rooms, one treatment room, on-site X-ray facilities, laboratory services and a therapy gym. The current Scott & White – Pflugerville clinic has six exam rooms and just more than 3,000 square feet. "By building a larger clinic to serve our patients in Pflugerville, we're responding to a growing demand in the community for additional services and more space," Sundquist says. "We've outgrown our current location, and a larger clinic will offer more convenient care in the right place at the right time for patients in Pflugerville and those coming in from outlying communities." Chau Nguyen, D.O., a family medicine physician at the current Scott & White – Pflugerville clinic, and new family medi- cine physician Catherine Meshew, M.D., will be seeing patients at the new clinic, which will accommodate as many as six primary care physicians. Scott & White signed an agreement with developer Highline Real Estate Group of Dallas to build and lease the new space, which sits on a 1.2-acre lot.
