Enhancing Diagnosis for Vascular Disease Huron Regional Medical Center has a new and improved diagnostic tool to check blood flow, marking a higher level of vascular care for the Heartland Region. Acquired in January 2012, the Parks Flo-Lab 2100 is an advanced automated vascular machine that checks blood flow in multiple places on the body to screen for peripheral vascular disease (PVD). PVD can occur when plaque builds up in the arteries and reduces blood circulation in the arms, legs, hands and feet. This weak blood flow can lead to leg pain when walking, numbness and slow-healing sores on the legs and feet. The same risk factors that lead to PVD also contribute to heart attack and stroke, two of the leading causes of death in the United States. A Thorough Approach The Parks Flo-Lab 2100 is able to perform Doppler ultrasound for ankle brachial index testing, during resting and stress periods, and segmental pressure testing. Segmental pressure testing is a minimally invasive screening that uses cuffs to measure blood flow in the arms, legs, fingers and toes. Unlike a traditional blood pressure screening, which only checks pressure in one arm, a segmental pressure test provides a more comprehensive and detailed picture of the entire circulatory system and helps physicians pinpoint the exact location of a blockage, which is particularly valuable for elderly patients, those who smoke and patients with diabetes. “This is the most advanced vascular screening tool available, and it’s the only one of its kind in our area,” says Rich Janes, RTR, RDMS, RVT, RDCS, director of medical imaging at HRMC. “If the Flo-Lab detects a blockage, we have a wealth of other imaging tools, including ultrasound, computed tomography and magnetic resource imaging to further evaluate the problem and make an accurate diagnosis.” To learn more about diagnostic tools at HRMC, visit www.huronregional.org, click on “Services/Departments” and select “Radiology/Imaging”.
