++++++++++++++++++++++++ + + ++++++++++++++++++++++++ HOSPITAL ROUNDS +++ +++ For patients living in and around east Wichita or with high-acuity brain injuries, care continues to be available at Via Christi Rehabilitation Hospital, 1151 N. Rock Road, which offers comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services to patients from throughout the Midwest. "Our goal is to provide exceptional care in a patient- and family-centered environ- ment," says Cindy LaFleur, President of Post-Acute Care for Via Christi in Wichita. "Offering close-to-home rehabilitation care on both sides of town is another move in that direction." CIBOR RESTRUCTURING, MOVING TO NIAR The Center of Innovation for Biomaterials in Orthopaedic Research (CIBOR), founded four years ago as a joint venture of Wichita State University (WSU) and Via Christi Health, is being restructured and is moving to the National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR) on the university campus. CIBOR will remain a joint venture of Wichita State and Via Christi Health but will be managed by NIAR. NIAR Executive Director John Tomblin, Ph.D., and WSU Associate Provost David McDonald, Ph.D., will oversee CIBOR. The scientific staff will be retained and will continue to work on current research projects. CIBOR has been successful in several areas of orthopedic device development, with a number of patent submissions in the area of bone void fillers, spine restoration devices and novel surgical instruments. CIBOR has attracted and completed several contracts for major orthopedic manufacturers and has made discoveries that will influence a range of orthopedic devices. Notably, CIBOR received funding from the U.S. Department of Defense and is developing a battlefield stabilization device for the military. With the move and restructuring, 18 | Greater Kansas MD NEWS ■ MDNEWS.COM CIBOR will take the opportunity to adapt the outlines of its original proposal. Both Dr. McDonald and Mike Wegner, Chair of the CIBOR board, Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Via Christi Hospitals, Wichita, expressed continued support for the activities of CIBOR. "We appreciate Rich Sullivan's many contributions during his tenure as CIBOR's chief executive officer and his continued support as we take steps to ensure CIBOR's long-term success," says Wegner. Dr. Tomblin also expressed his support for the restructuring, noting that NIAR/WSU and Via Christi Health have always partnered with CIBOR, which has been a separate entity since 2009. Over the next few months, CIBOR will move from its unfinished headquarters, and the engineering staff will relocate to offices within NIAR. The biology and animal facili- ties of CIBOR will remain within the WSU Department of Biology and the Orthopaedic Research Institute at Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis. INTERNAL MEDICINE GROUP RECOGNIZED FOR QUALITY LABORATORY SERVICES The Internal Medicine Group, 4525 W. 6th St., Lawrence, has been selected as a recipient of the Commission on Laboratory Accreditation (COLA) Laboratory Excellence Award. COLA is a nonprofit, physician- directed organization promoting quality and excellence in medicine and patient care through programs of voluntary education, achievement and accreditation. Accreditation is given only to laboratories that apply rigid standards of quality in day- to-day operations, demonstrate continued accuracy in the performance of proficiency testing and pass a rigorous on-site laboratory survey. The Laboratory Excellence Award is achieved by those COLA laboratories found to be compliant with all COLA essential and required criteria at the time of their on-site survey. In addition, award recipients must have demonstrated successful proficiency testing for the prior three testing events and have no valid complaints against the laboratory. EXPANSION PLANNED FOR MOELLER DERMATOLOGY AND THE SKIN ENHANCEMENT CENTER In order to accommodate the needs of an increasing number of clients, Moeller Dermatology and the Skin Enhancement Center have announced plans to expand facil- ities at the practices' east Wichita location. The growth will allow Moeller Dermatology — one of the leading skin care facilities in the region — to bring additional providers on board, supplying a wider array of physician expertise and continued patient convenience. The expansion will add 4,000 square feet to the facility's existing 16,000 square- foot footprint. "We're eager to begin the construction process and excited to see the final result," says Christopher A. Moeller, M.D. "This expansion will provide us with the space needed to see additional patients, add providers and expand our capabilities." Moeller Dermatology is again working with Shelden Architecture, the original architects for the current facility. Key Construction, which built the state-of-the- art dermatology clinic in 2003, is in charge of the project, which is slated for comple- tion by December 2012. ■ ADVERTISERS' INDEX AMA/HP ...........................................................9 AMA/Wells Fargo ........
