The best of both worlds, according to Carson Wong, MD, FRCSC, FACS. Dr. Wong is a nationally recognized endourologic, minimally-invasive and robotic surgeon and medical director of the Center for Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery at Parma Community General Hospital, where a 3D (three- dimensional) HD (high definition) surgical vision system from Viking Systems was recently installed. The addition of this system provides the hospital with a fully integrated 3DHD laparoscopic operating suite — report- edly the first in northeast Ohio, and one of a handful in the nation. While surgeons performing tradi- tional open surgical procedures can view a patient's anatomy in 3D using direct vision, laparoscopic surgery previ- ously limited such visualization to two dimensions. Essentially, natural depth perception was lost in favor of the patient benefits gained by minimally invasive surgery — namely, less blood loss and post-operative pain, a shorter hospital stay and quicker recovery. "The Viking 3DHD Vision System for laparoscopic surgery restores the surgeon's 3D vision. Our patients con- tinue to experience the benefits of laparoscopic surgery while our surgeons gain the critical depth perception lost with conventional 2D laparoscopy," says Dr. Wong, who specializes in the treatment of urologic cancers and stone disease, upper urinary tract reconstruc- tion and laser surgery for benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). He explains that surgical specialties, such as gynecologic, bariatric, thoracic and urologic surgery, experienced the benefits of 3DHD vision through the robot-assisted surgical platform that Parma Hospital installed last year. "Last year Parma installed a state-of- the-art robotic surgery system — Intuitive Surgical's latest system the da Vinci Si — in a newly constructed 3DHD operative suite, allowing everyone in the room the ability to view the operative field in 3DHD," Dr. Wong explains. "The Viking 3DHD system fits into our platform very nicely. We truly now are one of the few centers nationally and internationally who have the ability to offer this type of visualization for both standard laparoscopy and robot-assisted surgery in one location."
