26 March 30 • 2017 jn E arlier this year, 21 teen girls attended the 2017 Marilyn Barnett Immersive Weekend in the D, part of BBYO's exclusive Building Entrepreneurship program that exposed them to the professional and social opportunities that exist in the city of Detroit. This year, the weekend was named in memory of Marilyn Barnett, an adver- tising industry pioneer for women and founder of the Mars Agency. Barnett died in March 2016, and several friends created a fund in her name to sustain her legacy. The weekend reflected Barnett's drive, passion and vision, and served as an inspiration to young women interested in making an impact. The teens were deeply touched when they heard personal stories about Marilyn from her daughter, Rhona Barnett Gorosh, who visited to speak with the girls. The girls visited several businesses and met with female leaders. They toured some women-owned busi- nesses in Detroit, met owners of stores including Drought, Bon Bon Bon, The Ten and Detroit is the New Black, and heard from Jewish female entre- preneurs including Ashley Goldberg, founder of Born Yoga, and Annabel Cohen, caterer, author, restaurateur and cooking instructor. They also toured the Quicken Loans offices and received leadership and business tips from four top female leaders there. "This weekend was one of the most eye-opening and inspiring experiences I have ever had," said Julia Abramson, a junior at West Bloomfield High School. "Meeting these women who have made their way up the professional chain while simultaneously defying the unethical limits placed on them by society was truly invigorating. Now I am confi- dent that women before me have paved the way for my success and have exemplified woman power." Along with the entrepre- neurial content, the girls also had fun in Detroit at Escape the Room and at dinner in Greektown. "My favorite part of the weekend was being able to see Detroit in full swing," said Jordyn Wolf, a senior at Groves High School. "There was so much going on while we were walk- ing around, and it was really cool to see how Detroit is constantly grow- ing." Bloomfield Hills High School senior Elana Weberman said, "The greatest part was getting to see how inter- ested these top entrepreneurs were in having teenagers come to Detroit to learn from them. I feel so fortunate to be part of this organization and wish for everyone to have experiences like these within their lifetime." Building Entrepreneurship, which strives to teach girls the steps neces- sary to create their own businesses and empower them to become female leaders, is a year-long pro- gram that begins in the fall. About 25 teens are accepted each year. Along with the weekend in Detroit, partici- pants also compete in a Shark Tank- style competition to launch their business ideas and receive mentor- ship from local Jewish female entre- preneurs throughout the year. "During the weekend, I learned that one of the most important keys to success is finding something that you're truly passionate about," said Hannah Altman, a junior at Bloomfield Hills High School. "The program has heavily inspired me to reach my goals in creating my own business in future years and to suc- ceed in my everyday life." • For more information, contact Katie Fried at (248) 432-5685 or kfried@bbyo.org.
