Hands-only CPR
Every year, more than 350,000 cardiac arrests occur outside
hospitals, and about 90 percent of those are fatal, according
the American Heart Association (AHA). If performed
immediately, though, CPR can double or even triple a
person's chances of survival.
If a teen or adult collapses near you, the AHA recommends
you follow these simple steps:
1. Dial 911
2. Push hard and fast in the middle of the chest to a
rhythm of 100 beats per minute (about the rhythm of the
song "Stayin' Alive").
Judy Hurula, RN, BSN, clinical educator at CHRISTUS
St.žVincent, suggests finding other songs with a 100-beats-
per-minute rhythm online. Add them to your playlist, and be
prepared foržanything.
