from the Publisher Mid Hudson H Dan Senkiw PUBLISHER Mid Hudson DANSENKIW@MDNEWS.COM (914) 967-6565 ELLO, AND WELCOME to the September issue of MD News Mid Hudson. First a patient and now a practitioner, Jeffrey S. Oppenheim, M.D., neurosurgeon at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center, is the focus of our cover story this month. Dr. Oppenheim and his colleagues have developed a first-rate neurosurgical spine program located in Suffern, NY. The program encompasses the full scope of spinal diseases, disorders and injuries and is enhanced through Dr. Oppenheim's firsthand knowledge as a patient undergoing microdiscectomy. Also this month, we provide valuable medical information from Victor Khabie, M.D., FAAOS, FACS, Chief of the Department of Surgery, Co-Director of the Orthopedic and Spine Institute, and Chief of Sports Medicine at Northern Westchester Hospital. Dr. Khabie discusses the three most common sports-related injuries and how to accurately recognize the symptoms. Our national feature examines the projected physician shortage in the United States and looks to alternative models of care that may aid in averting it. As we speak to various public health experts — from New York State to New Zealand — several factors influencing the climate for shortage emerge. Read ahead to gain insight into this impending challenge and learn what foreign health systems are doing to meet the demand for primary care physicians, particularly in rural areas. As the landscape of the American health system rapidly changes, so, too, are the operations and technologies that guide the practice of medicine. In this and all issues of MD News, we strive to provide content pertaining to these and other matters that impact you most. Feel free to contact me to learn how you can contribute to the conversation. Thanks for reading, Dan Senkiw MATCH UP WITH YOUR PRACTICE NEEDS?
