While inpatient programs are often successful at helping people struggling with addiction, spending days or weeks away from family and work isn't always an option. And yet, it is vital to offer assistance, especially as the number of lives lost to abuse of heroin and prescription opioids continues to rise. To help manage the crisis, Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH) now offers an outpatient withdrawal management program with walk-in appointments. The community's response to the new program has been overwhelmingly positive — more than 200 people took advantage of this new service in the program's first few months. Support patients need The new program offers confidential addiction counseling in a supervised treatment setting, daily medication management, physical exams, group sessions and access to the continual care that experts considered crucial to successfully overcoming substance abuse. "Counseling services and pharmacotherapy offered in an outpatient program that encourages family involvement are vital to positive outcomes," said Harshal Kirane, director of Addiction Services at SIUH.
