NEW ROUTE
TO NEW ZEALAND
In November, American Airlines
announced new service to New
Zealand with daily flights between
Los Angeles (LAX) and Auckland
on the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.
Choosing a favorite patch of coastline
in New Zealand would be a tall
order — if it weren't for the Bay
of Islands, a subtropical maritime
playground of secluded coves,
beachy peninsulas, sleepy towns
and 144 offshore isles hiding up on
the country's serrated northeast edge
about three hours by car (or a quick
40-minute flight) from Auckland.
A favorite getaway zone for local Kiwis
and international travelers alike, the only
real risk in the country's "winterless" north
— a year-round magnet for surfers, sailors,
sportfishermen, sunbathers and swimming-
with-dolphin types — is occasionally
forgetting exactly where you are.
For an easy reminder, stroll through
the area's historic and still-quirky port
town of Russell, New Zealand's original
capital and home to the country's first
European settlers. Continue on to the
hallowed Waitangi Treaty Grounds, where
the nation's seminal founding document
was signed on Feb. 6, 1840, by the British
Crown and numerous Maori chiefs. The
rest is Kiwi history.
