Spring 2015
Months worth of cash the
average American should
have available in savings …
just in case.
3 to 6:
Clipping coupons, buying 10 of a certain item, using a store's membership card — all are popular
(and outdated) ways to add savings at the register. Today's method? Apps. Personalized shopping
encourages you to consider the items you want to save on. Some are more personalized than others;
all reveal savings you would have missed otherwise. The two most popular seem to be Walmart's
Savings Catcher and Target's Cartwheel app. Here's how they stack up.
Nice save
With Cartwheel, you
save on products that
you select (10 percent
off a box of cereal, for
example). You only
have a certain number
of discounts to choose
and savings can range
from 5 to 30 percent.
Simply present your
app's barcode at
checkout. Bonus:
Target lets
you "stack"
manufacturers'
coupons on top
of your in-store
savings.
Savings Catcher acts
as a personal price-
matching assistant,
calculating the
diff erence between
a competitor's price
and Walmart's price.
The app then gives
you the diff erence,
to be tallied on a gift
card. With Walmart's
pricing structure, the
retailer clearly isn't
worried about being
undercut. But when
it is, you reap the
reward.
