DEAR PHYSICIANS: The journey we are on to reach our vision for JohnsHopkins All Children's Hospital is embodied in this issue of Leading Care. We are serving patients and families with new programs, training the next generation of pediatric specialists with our graduate medical education programs and attracting nationally recognized talent to expand ourcapabilities. Johns Hopkins All Children's is transforming from an excellent clinical community hospital to an academic health system that is caring for an increasingly high volume of critically ill children from throughout the state and beyond. We are advocating for those children by working toward fair managed care rates and ensuring that all children have access to expert care. Patient-centered care remains our primary mission, and this issue showcases it in many ways. A boy in Brazil benefited from the skill of George Jallo, M.D., who removed Rafael's spinal cord tumor. Our new Peripheral Nerve Clinic provides Florida families with convenient access to Dennis Hart, M.D., and our multidisciplinary team. Alex Rottgers, M.D., works with families, often before the birth of their child, to create treatment plans for those diagnosed with cleft palates. Being a leading academic health system requires more than that, however. Educating the next generation of physicians brings in bright minds to challenge preconceived notions and keeps us current on new thinking and research. Fresh eyes see new possibilities, and that leads to improvements in care, quality and discovery. We recently celebrated the graduation of the inaugural class of our JohnsHopkins All Children's Residency Program. They already are impacting the future of pediatric medicine. Our growth in education and research also allows us to attract new talent from around the country. This issue introduces Jen Arnold, M.D., M.Sc., FAAP, and Mohamed Rehman, M.D. Dr. Arnold will lead our expanding Simulation Center, which will educate clinicians, families and community first responders. Dr. Rehman chairs our newly elevated Department of Anesthesiology and will help shape our Health Informatics Core, which will harness data to improve patient care, improve safety and reduce costs. Dr. Rehman's research ties in closely with the clinical database work in our Heart Institute, where we recently installed Je Jacobs, M.D., FACS, FACC, FCCP, and Gary Stapleton, M.D., as the permanent directors. The databases and samples sometimes can seem abstract, but we established our Clinical Research Unit to make it convenient for families to participate in clinical research trials. Ultimately the care, the education, the research and the advocacy are built around one thing: serving our patients. Sincerely, Jonathan M. Ellen, M.D. President, CEO and Physician-In-Chief Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital Vice Dean and Professor of Pediatrics Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Summer 2017 3 President's Letter
