The drug was developed by Osiris Therapeutics, Inc. to treat graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), a medical condition affect- ing pediatric patients who typically need painful bone marrow transplants as part of their treatment plans. GVHD quickly leads to death in 80% of patients. In clinical studies of Prochymal, approxi- mately 64% of patients responded to the drug, and survival rates were significantly boosted. These clinical trial results played an important role in Health Canada granting approval. Prochymal is currently used in other countries, including the United States, in limited capacity, based on regulations of the expanded access program.
