A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that every 10 gram per day increase in fiber intake led to a 7 percent reduction in breast cancer risk. You may know there are two main types of cholesterol and that one is considered to be "good" and the other "bad." But do you have trouble remembering which is which? An easy way to remember that HDL (high- density lipoprotein) is "the good cholesterol" is to associate H-D-L as being what your "Heart Dearly Loves." An HDL level below 40 mg/dL raises your risk for heart disease, while a level of 60 mg/dL or above can lower your risk. You can raise your good cholesterol levels by incorporating these healthy practices into your life: + Quit smoking or don't smoke. + Eat fresh, nonprocessed foods, avoiding trans fats (hydrogenated oils) and including monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats (olive oil, avocado and nuts) in your diet. + Maintain a healthy weight. + Raise your heart rate for 30 minutes five days a week through regular exercise or physical activity. Ask your doctor about your numbers after your next cholesterol screening. Cholesterol Be Strong!
