Dear Friends, The school year offers great opportunities for children to get active. This issue of Forever First offers tips for backpack safety (Page 4), advice for managing sleep schedules (Page 9), and help navigating childhood conditions such as Type 1 diabetes (Page 5) and asthma (Page 10). We're also celebrating our successes at The Children's Hospital of San Antonio, with inspiring stories of our young patients Kaden Langston (Page 6) and Madelynn Niles (Page 8). Thanks to the work of surgeons at The Children's Hospital of San Antonio, the complications of Kaden's birth are behind him, and a happy life is ahead of him. Madelynn's story is also captured in this issue, but for an even better read, you can find the book she was inspired to write about her treatment: My Hospital Journey: It's Okay to Be Afraid. I hope you'll find these stories heartwarming, the health tips informative, and the fall full of opportunities for adventure with your family. From all of us at The Children's Hospital of San Antonio, here's to a healthy school year! Committed to doing everything for our Children, Elias J. The team at The Children's Hospital of San Antonio has assembled a fleet of motorized cars for children to drive to the operating room before their surgeries. Children of all ages who can sit up are welcome to either take the wheel and drive to the operating room or let a nurse handle the navigation via remote control. "When children come to the Hospital, they are often disoriented and a little bit scared," says Vickie Squires, MMed, CCLS, Child Life director. "By adding fun activities like driving these cars, we are taking steps to help children feel comfortable and forget about their fears."
