Northwell Health's Peconic Bay Medical Center recently broke ground to begin the two-year construction project of the Critical Care Tower. The centerpiece of the new $60-million Critical Care Tower is a compre- hensive cardiac care center, named the Kanas Regional Heart Center. The Heart Center will feature cath labs, the first facilities of their kind on the East End, and have the potential to save hundreds of lives each year. The new three-story Critical Care Tower will be built over the existing Emergency Department, doubling its size. The tower will include a rooftop helipad, two ultra-modern operating cardiac cath suites, an electrophysiology suite, recovery rooms and an 18-bed Intensive Care/Cardiac Care Unit. An expert team of interventional car - diologists will be working with experienced registered nurses and staff in the cath labs. In anticipation of the expansion, as of February 2017, Peconic Bay Medical Center began operating as a Level III Trauma Center after earning provisional status from the NYS Department of Health. It is the only trauma and stroke center on the North Fork. A strategic alliance between New York Medical Partners (NYMP) and the Independent Physician Association of Nassau/Suffolk Counties will provide residents of Queens, Nassau and Suffolk counties with access to a comprehensive, patient-centered network of community- based physicians and specialty healthcare services. As a result of aligning the services of more than a com - bined 2,000 physicians, the partnership will streamline patient access and referral to specialized care. NYMP, and its recently approved ACO, is a partnership of geograph - ically aligned physicians and physician organizations. Its founding members are South Nassau IPA, an independent physician associa- tion affiliated with South Nassau Communities Hospital along with several community based independent physicians. Spanning Queens, Nassau and Suffolk counties, NYMP has grown to more than 250 phy - sician members. Angelina Caracci, a resident of Stony Brook, was awarded the honor of Junior Volunteer of the Year. Caracci began her service in 2014 and has donated more than 640 hours of service to the Core Lab. Mark Latino, of Stony Brook, was awarded the honor of Senior Volunteer of the Year. To help advance its research to treat diabetes, a disease that current - ly affects 29 million Americans, or just under 10 percent of the popu- lation, Northwell Health's Feinstein Institute for Medical Research received a $1 million gift from The Knapp Family Foundation to launch a four-year research program that uses bioelectronic medicine to treat the disease.
