GROWTH without Sacrifice BY JONI WALTON YOU CA LL TO place an order for medi- cal supplies and are greeted by the ever frustrating automatic answering service. Press 1 for this, 2 for that … Sound familiar? In so many ways business has become so impersonal. Why does the process of ordering from a supplier have to be so cumbersome? After all, it shouldn't be painful to do something as simple as place an order. It's almost like you have to work for it. It is all about electronic communication, ordering, billing, etc. Don't get me wrong, technology has its place and has made it much easier to streamline processes. However, there is something to be said for the personal touch. I get it, people are in a hurry. You have a million things to do and a limited amount of time to do them. Sometimes you just want to call and speak to someone you know and trust who is looking out for your best interests. Wou ld n't you love t o dea l w it h a company that for, lack of a better term, "has your back?" Don't get me wrong, all companies small and large still have to deal with the same regulations. But the one thing small companies have that the large companies don't is less people. People in smaller companies are more like family. The atmosphere is better, sta„ is happier and they actually care. Smaller companies have more flexibility. Yeah, sure our cuto„ time for shipping stock orders same day may be 3:30 EST. But if you call at 3:45 and really need something to go out that day, we will accommodate you. And there are no added fees. Everyone is on a budget these days and price is definitely important. The bigger companies may be able to o„er bet- ter pricing and work on lower margins. However, most small companies have worked with manufacturers for years and have developed personal relationships with them. So don't count us out — these relationships we have forged allow us to o„er amazingly competitive prices and provide that personalized service you won't find in a larger company. As companies grow, and regulations become more stringent, the laws make it harder and harder for businesses to exist. Customer satisfaction often times falls to the bottom of the list. As a business owner, I see our own suppliers go through mergers and acquisitions. As these companies continue to grow, the level of service seems to keep dwindling. It seems the concern is how much market share they can cover vs. how they can best serve their customer. Small companies have the same issues as we grow, and speaking for my own com- pany, the number one concern continues to be customer satisfaction, which will continue to be our number one priority when making any business decision. When I started my company 23 years ago, I vowed we would never imple- ment voicemail. I feel it is important to be greeted by a human and develop relat ion sh ips w it h ou r cust omers. Today, when you ca ll you will spea k with a live person each and every time. We want to take time to get to know our customers — you are not just a number. When you ca ll, you don't need to recite a slew of numbers or passwords for us to identify you. We are on a first name basis with most of our customers. Now, for a ll of you who just want to hop online and place your order, we can accommodate that too. Our website is open 24/7 for a ll your online order- ing needs.
