MetroHealth Relocates Inpatient Rehabilitation to Modern Center in Old Brooklyn By Robert Janek M E TR O H E A LT H REHABILITATION INSTITUTE OF OHIO has a new home — in Cleveland's historic Old Brooklyn. Upon completion of $1.5mil- lion in upgrades to the Old Brooklyn Health Center, MetroHealth moved all inpatient rehabilitation services in October to this 50,000+ square-foot facility which is located just two miles south on Pearl Road. Outpatient reha- bilitation services will also be relocated here in the not-too-distant future. The goal is to provide a full range of rehabilitation services in a freestanding convenient location for patients and their families. "We've moved our three inpatient rehab units to the sixth, seventh, and eighth floors of the north tower of the Old Brooklyn Health Center, along with our 150 clinical staff and eight inpatient physicians," says Gary S. Clark, MD, medical director of the MetroHealth Rehabilitation Institute of Ohio. "We've also moved our administrative support team, our residency training program and the PM&R clinical research program to the fifth floor of this facility. We have about $16 million in funded research, so that's a significant venture itself." Known for innovative thinking, Dr. Clark, who is also residency program director and chair of MetroHealth's and Case Western Reserve University's (CWRU) Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), has been instrumental in driving MetroHealth's PM&R program to new levels by: + integrating the Rehabilitation Institute with MetroHealth's accredited Level I Adult Trauma Center (the only one in Cleveland), JCAHO-designated Primary Stroke Center, and Metro Life Flight (the region's largest critical care transport service); + partnering with the internation- ally acclaimed Cleveland Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) Center in collaboration with CWRU and the Cleveland Louis Stokes Veterans Administration Medical Center; + obtaining 'Model System' designa- tion (the only one in Ohio and one of fourteen in the nation), and the $2.5million grant that goes along with this from the National Institute on Gary S.
