from the Publisher Jan Raabe PUBLISHER Cleveland- Akron-Canton JRAABE@MDNEWS.COM (330) 499-5332 W Cleveland/Akron/Canton ELCOME TO THE November-December issue of MD News, where you'll find stories and articles about, from and for physicians in the greater Cleveland/Akron/ Canton area. Excellence in medicine has service at its core. Whether directing a team of surgeons at UH Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital or leading a child health initiative in Northeast Ohio, our cover story doctor, Edward M. Barksdale, Jr., remains committed to this belief. Dr. Barksdale is surgeon-in-chief of UH Rainbow where he holds the Robert J. Izant, Jr., MD, Endowed Chair in Pediatric Surgery. In addition to several other clinical and academic leadership positions at UH and CWRU, he also serves as co-chair (along with the Cleveland mayor and police chief) of Project Focus, a youth violence prevention program; mentor promoting educational excellence in inner city children at the Ginn Academy; and tireless advocate of injury prevention programs for Amish youth in Geauga County. And there's more. Read all about the events, including an encoun- ter with Martin Luther King, Jr., which sparked Dr. Barksdale's passion to serve children in our community. In other stories we focus on Akron General's new Gamma Knife Center and the new stand-alone home for MetroHealth's Ohio Rehabilitation Center. We also take an in-depth look at the Audiology and Cochlear Implant Programs at the UH ENT Institute and the LTAC services provided by Kindred Hospital Cleveland. In addition, there's an update on stem cell therapy from two physician/researchers at UH Seidman Cancer Center and a Q&A with a specialist in Alzheimer's Disease at Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health. We hope you'll enjoy these and all of the stories and articles in this issue. (Be sure to check out our Clinical and Business Sections.) As always, feel free to contact me with any comments or suggestions. Thanks for reading!
