That's because Orange County will be the only 2018 site for the annual event for Jewish teens. The last time there was one Maccabi Games site was 1994, when Cleveland was the lone host. Usually there are two or three sites, with ArtsFest at one of those sites. "They just couldn't find anyone else to be a host next year," said Karen Gordon, a Detroit delegation head, along with Franci Silver. An important meeting for prospec- tive Detroit Maccabi Games athletes and ArtsFest participants and their parents will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 17, at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield. "This will be our only kickoff meet- ing for the 2018 Maccabi Games," Gordon said. "Attendance isn't manda- tory, but highly suggested. We'll dis- cuss cost, tryouts, what the week will be like, coaches will be introduced ..." Gordon acknowledged the meet- ing will be on the sixth night of Chanukah. "We'll be done in an hour," she promised. "We've got the meeting down to a science." Next year's Maccabi Games will be Aug. 5-10. Merage JCC of Orange County, a 220,000-square-foot facility in Irvine, Calif., will be the hub of activities. ArtsFest will be in Long Beach, Calif. "There will be at least 2,000 kids there," Gordon said. Interestingly, Orange County was a Maccabi Games host is 2013, one year before Detroit hosted in 2014. The same thing happened in 2007 and 2008 and will happen again in 2018 and 2019, when Detroit is a host. "All that is a coincidence," Gordon said. JEWS ARE BIG HITS Jews have been in the news in profes- sional baseball. • Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman became the first Jewish player to have a walk-off hit in the World Series when his RBI single in the 10th inning knocked in the winning run in the Astros' 13-12 vic- tory over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 5. • Earlier in the World Series, Dodgers outfielder Joc Pederson hit a three-run homer in the top of the ninth inning of a 6-2 Los Angeles win in Game 4. Bregman hit a solo homer in the bottom of the ninth. • Ex-Detroit Tigers outfielder Gabe Kapler was named manager of the Philadelphia Phillies. Kapler, 42, has a tattoo of a Star of David on his left leg and another tattoo that reads "Never Again," a reference to the Holocaust, with a flame and dates of the Holocaust, on his right leg. Director of player development for the Dodgers since 2014, Kapler was a coach for Team Israel during the 2013 World Baseball Classic. Kapler is the lone Jewish manager in the Major Leagues. Brad Ausmus was fired as Tigers manager just before the end of the season. • Send sports news to stevestein502004@ yahoo.com.
