from the Publisher Richard Keene PUBLISHER Central New York RKEENE@MDNEWS.COM (315) 446-8331 T HANK YOU VERY MUCH for reading the November/December issue of MD News. Once again, we examine the world-class health care available right here in Central New York. Our cover story features the cancer care services available through the UHS sys- tem — including Wilson Medical Center, UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital and UHS Binghamton General Hospital. The cancer services at UHS cover a wide spectrum of care with advanced protocols, clinical research and cutting-edge technologies. People close to the program always point out that, despite all the sophistication of the medicine and methods, the importance of compassion and the patient experience is most emphasized. UHS is proud of its new site in Vestal, NY, which houses, among other services, a women's health center where imaging and surgical services are available under one roof. The folks at UHS are running the kind of cancer services program that serves all of the region's patient needs. In another feature story, we cover the creation of Crouse SportsMedicine and the launch of SportsCare Express. SportsCare Express, an after-hours clinic, is one component of the overarching Crouse SportsMedicine program, which offers a continuum of sports medicine care that includes complete orthopedic and general surgical services, nationally recognized cardiac care, a concussion program and a full range of physical and occupational rehabilitation services. Brought to you by Crouse Hospital, the official hospital of Syracuse University Athletics and the official sports medicine hospital of the Syracuse Crunch, SportsCare Express is open seven days a week to serve the weekend warrior or those interested in avoiding emergency room delays. Also in this issue, Jerry Hoffman, Executive Vice President of the Onondaga County Medical Society, examines the true double standard set in the New York State Court of Appeals' recent decision in Dombrowski v. Bulson. The decision establishes that a lawyer who is held liable in malpractice does not owe the plaintiff for pain and suffering. How can the court justify shielding lawyers from pain and suffering damages when they are at fault but not afford the physician the same protection? It is pretty outrageous. Jerry reminds us that Sen. Tarky Lombardi Jr., with whom he worked for many years, was known as a "friend of the doctors." We should all be honored to be known as such. Also in this issue, we welcome two new columnists to our MD News family — Peter Derrenbacker, who shares his knowledge about group benefit design and insurance, and John Netti, who offers his expertise regarding electronic medical records and meaningful use. Once again, I would like to thank all those who come together to create our magazine. Here at MD News, we are dedicated to delivering an engaging reader experience, one with real local relevance. In each issue, we highlight distinguished and accomplished physicians and practice groups. We also provide updates on the latest medical studies, pointers for managing your practice and a unique look at what is happening in the local medical community. We love to receive nominations for our cover stories, current news within your organization and feedback on articles. I would also like to suggest that you visit www.mdnews.com to discover a wonderful resource for health care marketing. We are here to serve the physician and health care community.
