++++++++++++++++++++++++ + + ++++++++++++++++++++++++ HOSPITAL ROUNDS +++ +++ University hospitals are among the top 18% of the more than 3,400 Joint Commission- accredited hospitals that reported data in 2011. Both Southside and Staten Island University hospitals were rated as top per- formers in these areas: heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia and surgical care. St. Charles Hospital has been ranked as one of the "Top Performers on Key Quality Measures" by The Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of health care organiza- tions in the United States. St. Charles Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center, both members of CHS, are among just three hospitals in all of Nassau or Suffolk to earn this prestigious recognition, placing them in the top 18% of more than 3,000 hospi- tals evaluated. The ratings are based on an aggregation of accountability measure data reported to The Joint Commission during the 2011 calendar year. St. Charles Hospital earned a place on the Top Performers list for the second consecu- tive year. St. Charles Hospital most recently received this recognition for pneumonia, surgical care and stroke measures. The Intersocietal Commission for Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories has renewed its three-year accreditation of South Nassau Communities Hospital's Center for Cardiovascular Health in the areas of adult stress, adult transesopha- geal and adult transthoracic echocardiogra- phy. Accreditation is granted only to those facilities that are found to be providing quality patient care, in compliance with national standards, through a comprehensive application process including a detailed case study review. South Nassau Communities Hospital is one of just 167 hospitals nation- wide to be awarded the American College of Cardiology Foundation's National Cardiology Data Registry ACTION Registry–Get With the Guidelines Gold Performance Achievement Award for 2011. Catholic Health Services (CHS) is now of- fering bariatric surgery in both Suffolk and Nassau counties. CHS's St. Charles Hospital has expanded its services to include gastric bypass and adjustable gastric band procedures, such as the minimally invasive single-incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS). SILS, Roux-en-Y and other surgical weight-loss options are also performed at CHS's Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center, Mercy Medical Center and St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center — all of which have earned the Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence designation from the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. The Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU) at St. Francis Hospital, The Heart Center has received a gold-level Beacon Award for Excellence from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN). The award recognizes hospital unit caregivers who successfully improve patient outcomes and align practices with AACN's six standards for a healthy work environment. Units that achieve this three-year, three-level award with gold, silver and bronze designations meet national criteria consistent with Magnet Recognition, the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and the National Quality Healthcare Award. The hospital earned a gold award by meeting evidence-based criteria that include leadership structures and systems, appropriate staffing and staff engagement, effective communication, knowledge management, learning and development, best practices, evidence- based practice and processes, and patient outcomes. NuHealth wellness committee members meet to discuss the upcoming campaign "Off to a Good Start," at which employees will receive information about health edu- cation activities in the workplace, explore opportunities for increased physical activi- ties, learn about opportunities for healthful eating, and develop worksite policies to encourage overall health and wellness. Several of the members are holding up signs with part of the corporate heart logo that will be placed throughout campus walking trails.
