M orris E. Margulies loved a good joke, and nothing made him happier than bringing smiles to the faces of his loved ones. Morris, who lived in West Bloomfield, died Nov. 21 at age 79. He was the devoted son of Russian immi- grants Alex and MinnieMargulies, who came to the United States in 1931, sewing money into the lin- ings of their clothing in order to survive. Because of their strug- gle, Morris was deter- mined to be successful from an early age; being able to take good care of his family was para- mount. Alex was a builder and Morris learned the trade at his side. After graduating from Mumford High School in Detroit, Morris jumped right into the business. He founded American Custom Homes Inc. in 1957, building thousands of homes throughout Detroit, Southfield and surrounding Southeast Michigan communities. His hands-on approach and personal management of each home's construction earned him a reputation for quality — and a host of friends. Morris used the same approach a decade later when he began build- ing commercial real estate. He quickly gained industry status for building luxury shopping malls, shopping centers and office build- ings. Working side-by-side with three of his four sons, he built a legacy of success known today as the Margulies Investment Company, a renowned commercial real estate development and management com- pany based in Bloomfield Hills. "He taught us a lot, made us laugh a lot; he had a special brand of humor," said his son Jeff, who spoke at the funeral service. While becoming a successful entrepreneur was important to Morris, he never forgot where he came from. Family was everything. When he lost his father at a young age, he took his mother into his home and the two maintained a close relationship throughout her life. "His zest for life pro- pelled him; his love for his family and friends sustained him; his faith and commitment to Judaism enriched him; and his energy and laughter endeared him to so many …," said Rabbi Aaron Starr of Congregation Shaarey Zedek, who officiated the funeral service. Morris loved people; he was always ready to give advice or lend a hand to those who needed his help. He loved making people laugh, with a good practical joke or one of his famous one-liners. "He was tough and opinionated, yet caring. He lived life his way," Jeff said. Morris is survived by his cher- ished sons, Adam Margulies, Jeffrey (Brooke) Margulies, Alex Margulies and Andrew Margulies; his lov- ing granddaughter, Whitney ; and his loving companion, Rhonda Ginsburg. He was the devoted son of the late Alex and the late Minnie Margulies. Interment was at Adat Shalom Memorial Park.
