Applying hard work, integrity and vision, Stephen and his brother Alan grew the Southfield-based Hayman Company into a nationwide property management and leasing firm. Holdings include apartments, office buildings, shopping centers and hotels. These purchases were often the beginnings of lifelong friendships. After contracting Parkinson's disease — an incurable neurologi- cal disorder — Stephen continued leading a fulfilling life. "The average life span is 10-15 years, but he lived 33 years," said Rabbi Joseph Krakoff, the Hayman family's rabbi at Congregation Shaarey Zedek of Southfield. Cantor Daniel Gross also officiated at the funeral service for Stephen Hayman, 77, of Bloomfield Hills, who died Dec. 6, 2017. The elder son of Ada and Lou Hayman, both deceased, Stephen was born April 27, 1940, in Detroit. After graduating Mumford High School, Stephen studied business in a University of Detroit program that took him straight to law school. He was interested in pursuing a real estate career though "his father wanted him to be a dentist," said Linda (Levin) Hayman, who married Stephen on Dec. 15, 1963. She was on break from her col- lege in California when her parents' friend, who lived down the street from Stephen, introduced them. The Haymans were enthusiastic hosts who liked fine dining, espe- cially at Detroit's London Chop House. Grandson Jonathan Hayman knew about the refined culinary tastes of his "Papa" when Stephen came "to my first-grade class for lunch — and enjoyed the low-quali- ty lunchmeat chicken Caesar salad. I'm surprised he could tolerate it, but he said it was amazing." Mitchell Hayman recalled the comedic way "Papa used 10 stuffed dolls to bring the seder plagues to life." The Haymans were supporters of Congregation Shaarey Zedek, Marwil Jewish Community Film Festival, Michigan Parade Company, American Committee for Weizmann Institute of Science-Michigan Region, Kadima, JARC and Jewish National Fund. Stephen was in the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit's Real Estate Division. Unwilling to accept the limits of having Parkinson's, Stephen would read "about a new drug or surgery, and he would call the doctor in the article and make an appointment to see if he was a candidate," said daughter Valerie Sklar. Linda made sure Stephen "got up and out the door" for physical therapy and boxing therapy for Parkinson's patients. He rode his stationary bike until a month ago. "Even when his voice was not strong, he always had a smile on his face and gave a hearty hand- shake," Valerie said. Mr. Hayman was the husband of Linda Hayman; father of Valerie Hayman ( James) Sklar and Andrew (Becky) Hayman; and "Papa" of Sam Sklar, Sophie Sklar, Jonathan Hayman, Mitchell Hayman and Lauren Hayman. He also is survived by his broth- er, Alan (the late Anita) Hayman; sister-in-law and brothers-in-law, Vicki and Dr. Myron Rubin, and Robert Levin; and other family members. Surviving caregivers are Tom Hafner, Amawn Fancher, Edsel Angaray and Carman Capatana. Interment took place at Machpelah Cemetery in Ferndale.
