Average pay in North Dakota was $361,000. The fi gure was $359,000 in Alaska and $354,000 in South Dakota. Earning the least were physicians in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Rhode Island, at $235,000, $260,000 and $261,000, respectively. Slightly more than half of all physicians who responded to the Medscape survey said they were compensated fairly. At the low end of the salary-satisfaction spectrum were nephrologists (41 percent). Emergency medicine physicians were the most satisfi ed (68 percent). Among the survey's other fi ndings: + Employed physicians generally earned less than self-employed physicians — $269,000 compared with $343,000. + A mon g physicia n s you n ger t ha n a ge 35, men ea r ned about 18 percent more than women.
