The right way to play with your food
Get kids involved in cooking to make food fun.
Find easy new ways to enjoy familiar ingredients to bust kitchen boredom. Try these tips to mix up meal time and get kids
excited about eating their vegetables.
Mixed, mashed
root veggies
Hand your
child a potato
masher and
a bowl of
steamed
rutabaga to make a
whipped side dish.
Oversee adding
seasonings, then work
together to mix them
into a smooth texture.
Oodles of fun
Help your child
wash and
peel a few
small sweet
potatoes, and then use a spiral
tool to turn them into orange
noodles. Try this task together
until you're comfortable letting
your child try it alone. Pair
your veggie "swoodles" with
nutritious toppings, like sautéed
kale and turkey sausage.
Tasty turnip chips
Prep and peel a turnip to turn into
healthy chips. You may want to
handle slicing, or teach an older child
to use a handheld slicer with safety
guides. Toss slices with just a drizzle
of olive oil and your family's favorite
flavors — garlic powder, chili
powder and smoky cumin are great
options. Pop them in the oven
at 300 degrees for 10 minutes or
until they're cooked through.
Be on guard against germs. You and your
child should wash your hands at each
stage of cooking — before, during and
after — according to the US Department
of Health and Human Services.
