To be eligible to begin the RN program, students must first meet the following requirements: • be a licensed practical nurse • have at least 750 hours of credible work experience • have passed five prerequisite classes: chemistry, microbiology, human physiology, speech and sociology Currently, there are more than 150 LPNs working in the Huron area, while the demand for RNs continues to dramatically exceed the supply. The new Huron Nursing Program hopes to encourage these LPNs to consider taking that next career step. "Education is key to upward mobility in our community," says Sydow. "By creating opportunities for additional credentials and degree-earning programs, we are increasing the likelihood that our current workforce will advance their education and skill level." In addition to the LPN-RN program, HRMC and the Huron Nursing Taskforce worked with Lake Area Technical Institute and Mitchell Technical Institute to provide local opportunities for students interested in becoming a licensed practical nurse. "The more opportunities we are able to provide for our community members, the better we will be as a whole," said Sydow. "The community will be impacted positively by having a more advanced healthcare team to serve them locally." IT PAYS TO LEARN In addition to opening up a new nursing program, Huron Regional Medical Center (HRMC) Foundation also wants to remove the financial burden for those looking to pursue acareer in health care. "We are working with local and area healthcare facilities to create commitment scholarships for every qualified individual who enters the new two-year RN program," says Brooke Sydow, EdD, workforce program developer at HRMC. "These scholarships would cover 50to 100 percent of the costs associated with the program in exchange for the student's commitment to work for the facility that granted the scholarship."
