ANTHONY CARNELL, D.O. Meet Dr. Anthony Carnell What's Your Speed? Running is great for your heart health, and there's nothing like a race to motivate your training. Whatever level of challenge is best for you—marathon, half marathon, quarter marathon or 5k-race—be sure you are ready on race day. STAYING INJURYFREE AND MOTIVATED As your fitness level improves with training, you may be tempted to skip your warm up and cool down, but these workout rituals are essential. Warming up, for example, helps prevent sports injuries, boosts your sports performance and slowly raises your heart rate, which minimizes the stress on your heart, according to the American Heart Association. PLANNING THE FINAL DETAILS In addition to dressing for hot or cool race day conditions, don't forget your sunscreen. No matter the temperature, sunburns are possible if the sun is shining. Before the race, plan how you'll stay hydrated during the event. The American College of Sports Medicine recommends drinking 3 to 8 ounces of a sports beverage every 15 to 20minutes when exercising for more than one hour, or the same amount of plain water if your race is less than one hour. Finally, don't feel like you have to load up on carbs the night before your race. The American Council on Exercise recommends eating a normal dinner, then enjoying high- quality carbs—the kinds found in quinoa, oatmeal or a sweet potato—the morning of your race. Anthony Carnell, D.O., is a family medicine physician who grew up down the road in The Woodlands. Dr. Carnell earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at Austin and received his medical degree from Arizona College of OsteopathicMedicine. "I have a passion for family medicine with a focus on the musculoskeletal system and sports medicine because of my interests in science and sports," Dr.Carnell said. "I enjoy connecting and sharing with my patients to help them reach their health and wellness goals. I am excited to work in a team atmosphere where our providers have the same common goal: our patients' health and well-being." Dr. Carnell and his wife, Hillary Carnell, D.O., met while in medical school. They have a two-year-old daughter. Dr. Carnell enjoys playing, watching and attending sporting events when he has free time. Dr. Carnell practices at CHI St. Joseph Health Austin's Colony clinic. For an appointment, call 979-690-4820.
