from the Publisher Mid Hudson Publisher: Dan Senkiw H Managing Editor: Maggie Neff to the December issue of MD News Mid Hudson. E LLO, AND WE LCOME Within the pages of MD News this month, we look back at the most impactful U.S. health care developments seen in recent years and contemplate the challenges leaders and lawmakers will face in the near future. While the past few years have brought dramatic shifts in health care, including the passage of the Affordable Care Act Dan Senkiw and swift movement toward adoption of electronic PUBLISHER health records (EHRs), the coming year promises still Mid Hudson more transition. Over the next 12 months, decisions DANSENKIW@MDNEWS.COM (914) 967-6565 made regarding the implementation of EHRs, affordable insurance exchanges and accountable care organizations just to name a few will affect every Americans health care future. Reecting on recent advances here in the Hudson Valley, we look back to 2007, when the Active International Cardiovascular Institute emerged at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center, offering a local, state-of-the-art cardiovascular program with a full spectrum of services, including catheterization, electrophysiology services, transesophageal echocardiogram, stress testing and cardiac surgery. The program continues to evolve and, most recently, has been enhanced with the formation of a dedicated Center for Valve Surgery. On the cover this month, Rawn Salenger, M.D., cardiothoracic surgeon, Director of the Center for Valve Surgery, department of cardiothoracic surgery at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center, provides insight into the ideas behind the center and its multidisciplinary approach to care. As the landscape of the American health system rapidly changes, so, too, are the operations and technologies that guide the practice of medicine. In this and all issues of MD News, we strive to provide content pertaining to these and other matters that impact you most. On a personal level, we send our best to the local medical community and praise the efforts put forth by the dedicated individuals who worked tirelessly through Hurricane Sandy. Feel free to contact me to discuss how regional conditions impact our medical community and how you can contribute thoughts and conversations within the pages of MD News.
