Susan Ecenbarger PUBLISHER Mid-Penn ............................................... 717-575-6691 ............................................... @MDNewsSCPenn Hello, and welcome to the Regional Insights edition of MD News Mid-Penn. Reading through the articles in this issue, one absorbs a sense not only of the diverse capabilities that leading healthcare organizations in the area already possess but of their uncompromising commitment to further progress. Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health (LG Health) is moving care forward through the seamless integration of mental and physical health care. LG Health plans to have licensed behavioral health counselors and clinical social workers in all 30 of its primary care locations in Lancaster County. This is a game-changer because patients are far more likely to utilize behavioral health resources if they can access them where they receive primary care. LG Health is also partnering with Universal Health Services to develop the 126-bed Lancaster Behavioral Health Hospital. The recently forged partnership between Penn State Health and Highmark Health will help create a broader network of local medical expertise that will benefit residents of central Pennsylvania. This unique collaboration — described as "a natural fit" by Penn State Health CEO A. Craig Hillemeier, MD — will allow Penn State Health to strengthen relationships with local providers and foster a full-fledged care network that remains community-based. Residents of the area will see improved access to specialty services and will enjoy overall greater connectivity to the Penn State Health system. The addition of cardiothoracic surgeon Giovanni Ciu—o, MD, to WellSpan Health's team of expert providers reflects the organization's dedication to providing advanced care to patients in York County and beyond. During a remarkably productive career, Dr. Ciu—o, Chair of Cardiovascular Surgery at WellSpan York Hospital and Director of Cardiovascular Surgery for WellSpan Health, has earned numerous accolades, in addition to playing a key role in leading-edge research. Perhaps his greatest impact, however, has been in the areas of minimally invasive and "bloodless" heart surgery. Thanks to these techniques, which Dr. Ciu—o helped develop and improve over a period of decades, patients benefit from a speedier recovery than is possible after conventional surgery. He performs a range of other challenging procedures as well. Our national feature presents the perspectives of four physicians who have provided care in underserved areas around the world. We round up news related to physician life balance, finance, the business of medicine and mental health as well. I'm excited to see medical care advancing rapidly in our region. I hope you enjoy reading about this encouraging progress. Warm regards, Susan Ecenbarger
