Jonathan Rosner MD, maternal-fetal medicine specialist and obstetrician-gynecologist at theŠSouth Nassau Center for Maternal Fetal Medicine, performs a non-stress test to ensure fetal well-being. Drs. El Kady and Rosner receive annual re-cer ti f ication f rom t he A mer ica n Board of Obstetrics and Gynecolog y in order to maintain their status. The nursing sta€ at the South Nassau Center for Maternal Fetal Medicine is certified in fetal monitoring, while the sonographers receive their credentials in obstetrical imaging by the American R e g i s t r y f o r D i a g n o s t i c M e d i c a l Sonographers. The American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine also certifies the ultrasound lab at the center. "Receiving these certifications shows that our sonog raphers know how to perform Doppler ultrasounds, nucha l translucencies and other procedures using the minimal amount of energy required from the machine," Dr. Rosner says. "We make sure certifications are renewed on time." DIABETES EDUCATION Women with pre-existing or gestational diabetes can meet with one of the Certified Diabetes Educators (CDEs) at South Na ssau. The CDEs a re ex per ienced in working with pregnant women and can help with nutritiona l recommen- dations, blood sugar maintenance and insulin administration. "Dr. El Kady and I make final decisions about treatment and medication, but our CDEs are extremely knowledgeable in their field," Dr. Rosner says. "They'll come to us with suggestions, and they are usu- ally right on the money." Jonathan Rosner, MD JON ATH A N ROSNER MD, maternal-fetal medicine specialist and obstetrician- gynecologist at the South Nassau Center for Maternal Fetal Medicine, attended medical school at SUNY Downstate Medical Center and performed his residency at North Shore University Hospital. He went on to complete his fellowship at NYU Langone Medical Center, where he learned from some of the most prominent experts in the field. "I chose the field of maternal-fetal medicine because I wanted to be a part of helping women have the best possible outcomes no matter the situation," Dr. Rosner says. Dr. Rosner is board-certified in both obstetrics and gynecology and maternal-fetal medicine. CERTIFIED CARE AT THE SOUTH SHORE The South Nassau Center for Maternal Feta l Medicine opened its doors on Febr ua r y 26, 2018, a f ter a thorough planning and development process led by Dina El Kady, MD, FACOG, Chief of the Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine at South Nassau. "I started working with South Nassau in October 2016, and we began the planning stages for the center almost immediately," Dr. El Kady says. "From the beginning, the level of support from the administration in building these types of services for women was unprecedented to me. It made launching the center so much easier." As the center's sta€ was assembled, South Nassau took measures to ensure that all physicians, specialists and nurses were certified in order to care for patients in maternal-fetal medicine. "The women we take care of on a daily basis require the sta€ to be highly knowl- edgeable in what they do," Dr. ElˆKady says. Both Drs. El Kady a nd Rosner a re b o a r d - c e r t i f i e d i n o b s t e t r i c s a n d g ynecolog y, andˆmaterna l-feta l medi- cine. Receiving board certification in materna l-feta l medicine is a rigorous process that involves both tex tbook medical knowledge and a propensity for quick thinking. "Most of what we do in maternal-fetal medicine has been studied, but there are many cases that don't have a strong ba sis in literature," Dr. Rosner says. "These can be high-risk, high-pressure situations where you have only a mat- ter of seconds before a serious problem develops. During testing, the board will give us hypothetical cases that mirror real emergencies and ask us to explain our decisions and thinking." Dina El Kady, MD, FACOG DIN A EL K A DY, MD, FACOG, Chief of the Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine at South Nassau Communities Hospital, received her medical degree from New York Medical College and performed her residency at The Brooklyn Hospital Center. She completed her fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at the University of California, Davis and is board-certified in both obstetrics and gynecology and maternal-fetal medicine by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. "I was always attracted to medicine — women's health care in particular," Dr. El Kady says. "After I completed my OB-GYN residency, I knew that I really liked the field of obstetrics and performing procedures for pregnant patients." 0 7 M D N E W S .
