Stop the Bleed, a national program initiated by the American College of Surgeons and sup - ported by Homeland Security, encourages first responders and everyday citizens to become trained and empowered to assist in a bleeding emergency until professional medical aid arrives. The Stop the Bleed program, held at North Babylon High School, was particularly successfully because it achieved one of NYU Winthrop's goals: to train the trainers, i.e. train other professionals who can, in turn, leverage their training to educate more members of the community. One North Babylon Security Guard, who is also a regis - tered nurse, indicated intentions to become an instructor, which would empower the school district to conduct its own training in the future.
