Exploring Soy's Oncologic Potential SOY HA S BECOME A SIGNIFICANT TOPIC OF RESE ARCH REGARDING ITS POTENTIAL CANCER›REL ATED BENEFITS. A STUDY PUBLISHED in Current Developments in Nutrition focused on a specific soy isoflavone: genistein. One role of genistein is to protect BRCA1, a gene that can help subdue tumor growth. In many cancer patients, the BRCA1 gene may be silenced — making it harmless to cancer cells — when a protein, aromatic hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), is triggered by carcinogens in the environment, including tobacco smoke. Researchers wanted to determine whether soy could help disable the eects of AhR on BRCA1, Medical News Today reports. Using cancer cells from breast cancer patients, the team was able to confirm that genistein could be used to reboot BRCA1. The researchers plan further experiments in this area. ■ M D N E W S .
