ALL BUSINESS OWNERS and staff members get together each year to go over next year's budget and we start crunching numbers to see how we can save money. This year is no different for Danlee Medical. In the past, we have had themes such as "Make it Happen," "Focus to Finish" and "Stay The Course." In my last article, I asked the question "Can regular exercise and clean eating help your overall work performance?" At that time, I suggested adding a line item to your budget for health and wellness of your employees. While I was writing that article, Danlee Medical was in the process of tearing down walls and reconstructing some of our warehouse space into a workout facility for our employees. The reconstruction is done and exercise classes have begun. Since the start on Jan. 1, I have been providing fitness classes to my employees which include Group Spin and Group Bootcamp. Classes are offered at 5:30 a.m., noon and 5:30 p.m. I am so excited about the results I am seeing/hearing. "I have lost 11 lbs. in the first 2 weeks." "I love working out at noon and then feeling so energized for the rest of my day." "I feel like all my stress is lifted after working out." "I feel cleansed after working out and ready to tackle my day." "The support we give to one another in the gym translates to the work environment." Wow! This is awesome! From a business owner standpoint, I notice employees who genera l ly did not communicate with each other now have a new level of respect for each other. Employees seem more awa re of how their actions a ffect our overa ll eff iciency offering suggestions on how to cut cost. I have a lso been told that the fact that I a m the f itness instr uctor a s well a s the President leading these classes and providing encouragement and instruction only streng thens us as a n orga nization. This is powerful stuff ! So what is the downside? It gets a little chaotic at lunch time with people running to the bathroom to cha nge into workout clothes. W ho is going to cover phones so ever yone ca n have a n oppor tunit y to f it in a workout? Yes, for the rest of the day employees a re wea ring workout clothes a nd a re sweat y a nd quite fra nk ly a little stinky. However, the benef its fa r outweigh the sma ll a mount of distraction. People a sk me why I do t h is. Hea lt h a nd f it ness a re passions of mine. Choosing to live a hea lthy lifest yle has cha nged me not only in my persona l life, but improved my business based on my ability to positively tackle cha llenges I fa ce ever y day a s a busi ness ow ner. P rov id i n g t hese workout classes fur ther suppor ts my passion while I a m able to help other people experience a hea lthy life. So, to answer the question, "Can reg ular exercise and clean eating help your overa ll work performa nce? " I think the a nswer is quite clea r. Lea n a nd Mea n in 2018!
