A Place to Turn for Quality Cancer Care The more we learn about cancer, the more we come to understand just how complex this group of diseases truly is. We know that tumors and cancer cells have unique characteristics that require customized treatments, which take into account numerous variables. As the body of knowledge in this field continues to expand, the need for additional research and specialization continues to grow. For decades, medical and radiation oncologists, together with highly trained surgeons, have diagnosed, managed and treated a majority of local residents who battle cancer. In addition to this group of cancer specialists, we now have the services of a surgical oncologist, head and neck cancer surgical specialist, gynecologic oncologist, hematopathologist (a pathologist with advanced training in blood disorders, including blood cancers), breast imaging specialist, and thoracic surgeons who specialize in lung cancer. The achievements of our Cancer Services team have been recognized at the state, regional and national levels on many occasions. Nationally, our cancer program has been awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award by the American College of Surgeons — Commission on Cancer for a third consecutive time. Only a small fraction of cancer programs have received this award once. For years we have worked to create a one-stop shop for cancer care — a place where local residents will turn with confidence when they or a loved one is touched by cancer. We believe that the SJH Frank and Edith Scarpa Regional Cancer Pavilion is that place. It's a central location where formal and informal collaboration, research, the exchanging of ideas and professional camaraderie are nurtured. In short, the Frank and Edith Scarpa Cancer Pavilion creates an atmosphere in which teamwork and patient-focused care thrive. Chet Kaletkowski PRESIDENT & CEO SOUTH JERSEY HEALTHCARE Image-Guided Radiation Therapy: Fast, Safe and Right on Target With its powerhouse imaging capabilities, the recently acquired Varian Trilogy Linear Accelerator, part of a $4 million equipment upgrade at the South Jersey Healthcare Frank and Edith Scarpa Regional Cancer Pavilion, takes cancer treatment to a new level. Delivering the safest, most effective radiation dose to a tumor site with pinpoint precision begins with advanced imaging technology. The new system at SJH provides high-quality 3D visuals to support the most efficient and effective treatment. "After 21 years of working in radiation oncology, I get a huge wow factor from this technology," said Joseph Fanelle, M.D., chair of Radiation Oncology at SJH. "Image-guided radiation therapy provides additional assurance to the physician that the right spot is being treated." Because the system delivers a high dose of radiation to a very small, targeted area, its use minimizes the potential for damage to surrounding healthy tissue, making it a popular option for breast cancer treatment. Stereotactic radiosurgery capabilities mean it can also be used to treat brain, lung and spine tumors. An electronic medical record interface enhances patient safety by ensuring consistency of treatment. Patient comfort was also taken into consideration during the design of the linear accelerator, which rotates around the patient to deliver image-guided radiation therapy from many angles.
