longmont United Hospital fall 2013 The number of bacterial infections caused by raw milk has increased over the last few years. Has the raw food craze gone too far? rAw RisKs HealtHcare ProfessIonals and raw food advocates both recommend drinking milk as part of a healthy, well-balanced diet. What they don't agree on is whether to pasteurize the milk, with the latter camp claiming pasteurization kills essential nutrients. A new FoodNet report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention might add more credence to the pro-pasteurization camp. The report shows a 14 percent increase in Campylobacter poisoning in the United States between 2006 and 2012. Campylobacter is a bacterium commonly found in unpasteurized dairy products. While this rise is alarming, the actual number of cases of Campylobacter poisoning was small—only about 14 per 100,000 people sampled. However, "cowshare" programs—in which individuals purchase stock in a cow from a local farm and receive a portion of its milk production—is permitted by state code.
