WELCOME TO THE INAUGURAL ISSUE of Advancing Pediatrics, a Children's National Health System quarterly publication for physicians. This magazine is the newly enhanced Medical Currents, and we hope you continue to find it useful in your practice. Some of you also may notice the enhanced Dr. Bear logo on the cover. We hope you enjoy the new look as much as we do. RESEARCH REFERRAL WEB RESOURCES Kurt Newman, MD PRESIDENT AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER Mark Batshaw, MD During the past two years as CEO of Children's National and for more than two decades before that, I have enjoyed working with many of you to provide high-quality care for kids. In fact, I have likely met most of you over the years—and those I have not yet met, I hope to do so in the near future. This year, Children's National is building a broader base to better support kids and the physicians who treat them in our region. We know we have to work smarter and more efficiently in meeting the needs of our colleagues in busy private practices. We also know we need to partner with you and other providers in our region to advance the field, conduct research, and provide more options and greater access to children and families in DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia. In this issue, you'll see information about topics I hope are relevant to you and your patients, including: + Our new Pain Medicine Care Complex, one of few programs in the country focused on treating pain as its own diagnosis (page 13). + A look at this year's influenza season and new guidelines from the Food and Drug Administration related to treatment for children as young as 2 weeks old (page 14).
