IN MEMORIAM ||| NEWS NOTES | CHILDREN'S NATIONAL HEALTH SYSTEM RECEIVES MAYOR'S SUSTAINABILITY AWARD Children's National became the first medical institution in Washington, DC, to be presented the Mayor's Sustainability Award for demonstrating outstanding achievements and leadership in sustainable practices. Children's National incorporates environmental sustainability into daily operations in all of its 30 locations in the metro area. Providing children with access to gardens and nature improves their healing process. Children's National also is undertaking a comprehensive approach to sustainability by focusing on environmentally preferred purchasing, conserving energy and water, offering healthy eating options, providing recycling at all facilities, and managing pharmaceuticals to keep chemicals out of landfills and waterways. NEW COLLABORATION WITH SIBLEY MEMORIAL HOSPITAL FOR PEDIATRIC RADIATION ONCOLOGY Children's National announced plans to create a collaborative new service with Sibley Memorial Hospital for pediatric radiation oncology. The program could start as early as 2014. The collaboration with Johns Hopkins Medicine and Sibley Memorial will make care accessible to oncology patients requiring radiation therapy using linear accelerator (photon) therapy. JODI PIKE, MD, a pediatric cardiologist at Children's National, passed away at age 35. Dr. Pike began her career at Children's National in June 2004 as a pediatric resident followed by a cardiology fellowship in 2007 and a fellowship in advanced cardiac imaging and fetal echocardiography in 2010. She joined the faculty in 2011 and was a highly valued member of the echocardiography laboratory and fetal cardiology team in addition to serving as Medical Director of the Heart and Kidney Unit. Dr. Pike was involved in numerous research and educational projects within the Division of Cardiology directed at improving care for fetuses, infants, and children with congenital heart disease. She was beloved by her colleagues and patients alike. People IN THE NEWS MARK BATSHAW, MD, Physician-in-Chief and Executive Vice President at Children's National Health System and Director of the Children's Research Institute, was honored by The Kingsbury Center with the Marion Kingsbury Award for Distinguished Service and Outstanding Achievement. The Kingsbury Center is the oldest nonprofit educational organization to address the needs of children and adults with learning disabilities and differences in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area. LAURA L. TOSI, MD, Director of the Bone Health Program at Children's National, was elected as the next President of the Medical Society of the District of Columbia, effective October 2013. The Medical Society of DC works to pass liability reform. Dr. Tosi also is one of the 2013 recipients of the American Medical Student Association Women Leaders in Medicine award. JOSEPH L. WRIGHT, MD, MPH, Senior Vice President for Community Affairs and head of the Child Health Advocacy Institute, received the Jim Seidel Distinguished Service Award at the 2013 AAP National Conference and Exhibition. The award recognizes members who have provided exceptional service to the field of pediatric emergency medicine. We Have a Winner!
