While we transform our physical campus to its new look and functionality, we remain open serving our children — more than 10,000 inpatients annually, 70,000 emergency department visits each year, and more than 100,000 outpatient visits throughout the year. In the heart of downtown, the Children's Hospital of San Antonio is transforming into a world-class center for pediatric care. A LEGACY OF CARE CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System has been providing care to San Antonio for more than 144 years. Three Sisters boldly travelled to San Antonio in response to calls for health care assistance in 1869. The Sisters continued to care for the children of San Antonio throughout the 20th century, building the first and only Hospital for children, Santa Rosa Children's Hospital, in 1959. The Hospital became part of the CHRISTUS family in 1999. In April 2012, CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System made another bold move when it answered the call for a world-class children's hospital in San Antonio with an announcement 10 to transform its downtown campus into a fully dedicated, freestanding children's hospital. A facility to provide coordinated, state-of-the-art care for South Central Texas' youngest citizens is something that the community has needed for decades. THE FIRST AND ONLY ACADEMIC CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL IN SAN ANTONIO Today, the Hospital is certified and separately licensed by The Joint Commission. With the massive construction project already underway, the Children's Hospital of San Antonio is open and serving the children of the community each day. We have forged lasting relationships with like-minded institutions that share our vision. Our new academic partner, Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), is ranked eighth in pediatric residency programs by U.S. News and World Report. BCM is recruiting, employing, and overseeing physicians for the Hospital. At press time, BCM has recruited more than 55 new physicians in a variety of specialties. We are also affiliated with Texas Children's Hospital, the top ranked children's hospital in Texas and fourth in the nation, which provides consulting and clinical expertise for the Children's Hospital of San Antonio. The Children's Hospital of San Antonio is an open medical staff model — we're dedicated to working with private practice physicians in the community. We're also focused on building a clinical research center with our physician partners. chofsa.org
