FOR MANY PEOPLE, A NEW YEAR EQUALS NEW GOALS. BEFORE YOU SET MAJOR RESOLUTIONS IN STONE, CONSIDER BREAKING THEM UP INTO MINOR MILESTONES. RESEARCH SUGGESTS IT takes as long as three months to form a new habit. Try these 14 ways to get healthier, stress less, and be more organized. 1. Just add water. Drinking water is one of the healthiest habits, because it keeps you hydrated without extra calories. 2. Take your lunch break. Don't be tempted to power through your day. Take a brain break to run errands or walk with a coworker. 3. Make that latte a treat, not the norm. Daily coffee runs can add up. Try cutting your latte down to a weekly treat. You'll save money and savor your drink more. 4. Pick up a journal. Whether you record what you eat, when you exercise, or how you feel, taking time to reflect about your day can help you become more present in your life. (See page 13 to read more about journaling.) 8. Have a no-phone zone. From the dinner table to the living room, turning off technology can help you connect with family and friends right in front of you and bring back dinnertime conversation and laughter. 5. Try a new workout. Think outside the gym and sign up for a dance class or go for a hike instead. 9. Stop clutter at the front door. Don't let the mail pile up. Sort bills and other important notes into one basket when you arrive home, then throw the rest away. 6. Clean 15 minutes each day. Is your house a mess? Tackle one room every day for 15 minutes. Breaking a bigger task down can keep you from being overwhelmed and giving up. 7. Seek out free activities. Fun doesn't have to cost money. Research what's going on in your town for free, jump in, and enjoy! 10. Cook something new. If you're in a rut, log on to Pinterest.com to find yummy and healthy recipes that inspire you. 11. Love thy neighbor. If you see a neighbor in need, help. Taking a meal over to an older neighbor or shoveling snow could mean the world to someone. 12. Swap your wardrobe. Before dropping clothes off at a donation center, host a clothing swap instead. Attendees can bring their own items and everyone will freshen up their wardrobes without spending a dime. 13. Prep your pantry and fridge. You never know when you'll need a quick meal. Chop and measure ingredients one day a week to save precious time for other activities. 14. Find your cause. What are you passionate about? Find a volunteer opportunity that allows you to make a difference.
