ACCESS TO PEDIATRIC SPECIALTY SERVICES is something we are working hard to improve. I am the first to admit that we do not always succeed as well as we would like. Since I became CEO, many of you have called or emailed me to talk through your access and communication challenges. While I wish you would never need to call me about these issues, I value the conversations because they give me a chance to hear from you, understand what you are experiencing, and provide guidance to our team so we can then do better. Children's National Health System is focused on doing what is right for kids, and we know getting an appointment when one is needed is essential. For that reason, we are monitoring our access data to the third next available appointment for new patients and working with our specialty areas on clear referral guidelines. This requires a change in our culture and many of our operational procedures. Bear with us as we continue to apply ourselves to better serve you and your patients. New partnerships and collaborations are key to bringing pediatric specialty services closer to families. On September 30, 2013, we opened a new, joint private practice with Inova: Pediatric Specialists of Virginia. This venture brings together specialists from both of our health systems to better serve the children of Northern Virginia. The practice employs specialists in gastroenterology, hematology/oncology, orthopaedics, nephrology, and genetics. Additional specialties will be added in the coming year. Children's National also partners with other community hospitals to provide pediatric hospitalists in their inpatient units. Our team has a presence at Mary Washington and Stafford hospitals, The HSC Pediatric Center, Holy Cross, and Peninsula Regional Medical Center. Beginning in July 2014, Children's National will no longer mail consult notes after a patient visit. Instead, we will email or fax these notes to your office, depending on your preference. We hope this will ensure you are kept informed about your patients in our care in a timely way. Be sure to let your physician liaison know if you have questions.
