Many cancer survivors experience lasting side effects following treatment. Through implementation of an Oncology Rehab Partners-certifi ed Survivorship Training and Rehab (STAR) Program ® — the fi rst of its kind in North Texas — Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano provides cancer survivors the tools necessary to reclaim their lives. Evidence-based education and training were used to develop Texas Health Plano's STAR Program, with an end goal of helping patients regain quality of life and improve their functioning. Individualized therapy plans are created for each patient in need of rehabilitation and address lasting fatigue, pain, anxiety, depression, weakness, cognitive impairment and sleeping diffi culties. "I've never seen a hospital with so many positive people," says Meredith Henderson, a cancer survivor who received rehabilitative services through Texas Health Plano's STAR Program. "I wish I could scream from the mountaintops to cancer survivors how much the physical and occupational therapy helps. I doubted the power of therapy at fi rst, but then, after they taught me simple things such as breathing properly, I was able to go from the bottom to the top of the stairs without gasping for air."
