Now the pastime is gaining popularity among older adults. According to the Pew Research Centers Internet and American Life Project, the largest growth on social networking sites in recent years has been among adults age 74 and older. USING SOCIAL MEDIA Facebook allows account holders to search for friends and family, share photos, send public and private messages, and chat with one another using instant messaging. Twitter—which allows users to follow short commentaries posted by businesses, newspapers, magazines, friends, family, and public figures—is also useful for keeping up to date. Although not considered a social media site, Skype offers users an online connection for video calls and chats—another great way for seniors to communicate face to face with nonlocal family members. SOCIAL MEDIA SITES OFFER A CONVENIENT WAY FOR OLDER ADULTS TO KEEP IN TOUCH WITH FAR-AWAY CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN AND TO RECONNECT WITH OLD FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES. PROTECTING PERSONAL INFORMATION Keep information safe online by following these tips. } UPDATE SOFTWARE REGULARLY. Customize the preferences on your Internet browser and antivirus software, so they update automatically as new security features become available. } AVOID UNFAMILIAR LINKS. Some scammers post messages on social media profiles that appear to be from friends or family members in an attempt to get users to click a link or download an attachment, which enables access to private information. If you ever question a message's authenticity, delete it and/or check with the sender before opening. } LIMIT WHAT YOU SHARE. Never post your street address, phone number, or other types of personal information on your social media profile. Also, refrain from mentioning your current location or specific dates when you will be out of town.
