from the Publisher E L C O M E T O MD News West Virginia. In this, our second issue for 2014, orthopaedics — from both a patient care and a medical research perspective — is our focus. We hear from Sanford Emery, MD, MBA, Chair of the Department of Orthopaedics at WVU Healthcare and President-elect of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, who discusses the guiding principles that inform staff and patient interaction. We also learn how increasingly advanced treatments for both children and adults are the result of an academic, research-oriented program that provides fellowship- trained physicians from a wide range of subspecialty disciplines. Two case studies demonstrating WVU Healthcare's multidisciplinary approach are profiled. Physicians and staff from W V U Healthcare's Orthopaedics Department are also involved in Operation Walk USA, a charitable program that provides hip and knee replacements to those in need. Broadening the discussion is an MD News special clinical section focusing on orthopaedics. We examine the ways bone fracture risk and Type 2 diabetes are linked. We also consider the role some cognitive behavioral therapists are playing to help patients with chronic pain find relief. MD News West Virginia is brought to you through an exclusive arrangement between WVU Healthcare and the publishers of MD News. As the premier business and practice management magazine for physicians, we seek to bring you the latest regional medical news and information, as well as insight into emerging research and trends on the national front.
