dukeraleighhospital.org 2 HEALTHY FOCUS Each May, we celebrate employee appreciation month by acknowledging Duke Raleigh Hospital staff for the exceptional care they provide every patient, every day. From keeping our hospital clean to making sure we have the supplies we need for compassionate care at the bedside, our entire team is essential in fulfilling our mission to provide extraordinary care. In one example, our intensive care unit (ICU) team has worked with other departments in the hospital to implement an advanced program that enables patients on ventilators to get out of their beds and walk. Based on new research, the initiative has been shown to help some ICU patients get back on their feet quicker, garnering national attention for Duke Raleigh's effort. Please see more examples of our amazing team by reading about our 2014 Living Our Values Champions of Excellence on page 8. On a sad note, it is with a heavy heart that we share the loss of founding physician and philanthropist Dr. Powell Graham Fox Jr., known as "P.G." by his many friends. Dr. Fox practiced medicine in Raleigh for more than 30 years, providing quality care for countless patients and outstanding leadership, which was integral in developing the hospital that we are today. Dr. Fox was 85 years old. It's such a privilege to care for the families of Wake County. We are truly grateful for your trust. Thank you. Wishing you wellness, Carla Parker-Hollis, MHA Interim President FROM THE PRESIDENT Welcome to the latest issue of Healthy Focus. Submit your entry at dukeraleighhospital.org/focus. Chris Brown, MD Dr. Brown believes most spine problems don't require surgery. He and his team at the Duke Spine Center are able to offer patients a full complement of treatment options—including surgery. Dr. Brown performs minimally invasive techniques to treat spine pathology. He is one of only a few physicians offering minimally invasive surgery for the treatment of scoliosis. "I perform minimally invasive lumbar surgery, complex cervical reconstructions and motion preservation surgery including artificial disc replacement," Dr. Brown says. "Most patients don't require spine surgery to get back to their quality of life. For those patients who need surgery, I offer a minimally invasive technique that allows a quicker return to normal activity." After serving as an attending physician at Duke University Hospital for the past nine years and regularly treating patients at Duke Raleigh, Dr. Brown decided to move his practice to Raleigh. "I've found I have a lot to offer the community by bringing here the advanced treatments we offered at the main academic hospital, and we're doing it in a patient-centered setting," Dr. Brown says. Aside from his thriving medical practice, Dr. Brown owns a farm and spends the majority of his time with his wife and their three children hiking, fishing and hunting. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Brown, call 1-888-ASK-DUKE (275-3853).
