WELCOME TO THE summer issue of Vital Signs. I hope you and your family are enjoying the best summer has to offer. In this issue, we highlight wellness and offer tips for exercising safely when it's hot. We also turn our focus to diabetes – a highly prevalent condition in our region. You can read more about diabetes and self-management techniques in our feature article on pages 4 and 5. As your partner in health, King's Daughters' Health is committed to enhancing the well-being and strength of our community. Our pursuit of this goal takes many forms – from providing charity care to contributing to the local economy. At KDH, our mission is "to improve the health of our patients through care, service and education," and this mission extends to community members who are unable to afford medical care. In 2013, KDH delivered $2.5 million in charity care to those in need. We also provided several million dollars' worth of uncompensated care, which is defined as the difference between the costs KDH pays to provide a medical service and the reimbursement we receive. Carol Dozier, CEO Dear Friends and Neighbors, 2 ✁ I am also pleased to announce that KDH – the largest employer in Jefferson County – provides the community with more than 900 jobs. In addition to the jobs we provide directly at the hospital, the Indiana Hospital Association estimates that more than 400 additional jobs are supported or created due to KDH's impact on our local economy. We rely on local businesses to obtain the services needed to deliver care, giving more than $27 million back to our local economy each year. At KDH, we view providing local healthcare as a community partnership. When you support KDH, you also support area families. We are proud to serve you and embrace our ability to invest in a healthier, stronger community.
