Helping You SLEEP BETTER Approximately 18 million Americans cope with the symptoms of sleep apnea annually, according to the National Sleep Foundation. Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center will be able to help more people sleep better thanks to current expansion eff orts. SLEEP APNEA AND OTHER SLEEP DISORDERS can lead to decreased quality of life and increased risk for health conditions such as heart disease. Signs that you or a loved one might be suffering from a sleep disorder include: • feeling tired during the day • history of hypertension • neck size larger than 17 inches for males and 16 inches for women • snoring • partner waking during the night because of snoring “If people are experiencing excessive fatigue, a sleep study can pinpoint what is causing the problem,” says Chris v manager of the Sleep Laboratory at Claxton-Hepburn. “The Sleep Laboratory is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of technicians and neurologists to ensure patients receive individualized care.” During sleep studies, staff members observe and monitor patients while they sleep in a comfortable bedroom with hotel-like amenities, including a private bathroom. Meeting a Growing Need In order to see more patients more quickly, the Sleep Laboratory is expanding from two beds to four. The new rooms will be able to accommodate handicapped and overweight patients, and sleep technicians will have additional space to work and monitor patients. “When patients are struggling with fatigue or tiredness, it can be stressful to wait for an appointment,” says Carroll. “With expanded services and space, the medical staff can serve patients more quickly so they can feel better sooner.” Tired of feeling tired? Both night and daytime studies are available for patients who work nontraditional hours. Celebrating 125 years of building trust. Physicians Give Back Whether they come from patients, the community, or physicians, donations to Claxton- Hepburn Medical Center make enhanced care possible for residents of Ogdensburg. Annually, Claxton-Hepburn’s physicians generously contribute to the hospital to expand services and provide exceptional care to patients. “Many physicians have built their lives here and become important members of the community,” says Cindy Clusen, executive director of the Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center Foundation. “Claxton-Hepburn is lucky to have medical staff who want to make a difference in the area—through their expertise, time, and money.” Physician giving serves as evidence of the strong sense of commitment Claxton-Hepburn doctors feel toward the mission of the hospital and the health of the community.
