::: emergency care ::: focus on health NorthShoreLIJ.com TO FIND A PHYSICIAN NEAR YOU, CALL 1-888-321-DOCS. 4 AFTE R AN EVE NTFU L Easter weekend with family, Ms. Sullivan went to bed feeling fine. She awoke on Monday morning with sinus pressure and a fever, and on Tuesday decided to go to Glen Cove Hospital. "By that time, I was very sick," Ms. Sullivan said. "I went to the Emergency Department, and the physician told me I needed a chest X-ray. They were not sure if my lung congestion was the only problem, so they sent me to the Clinical Decision Unit." Extra Care for Extra Security Open since April 2014, the Clinical Decision Unit (CDU) is an extension of the Emergency Department (ED) designed to treat patients who need extra attention. "CDU patients are not admitted to the hospital but remain in the ED and are seen by a clinician every four hours," said Brad Sherman, MD, medical director and chair of medicine at Glen Cove Hospital. "CDU clinicians think in terms of hours instead of days. This enables us to provide emergency clinical care in a more expedited manner." For Ms. Sullivan, this meant intensive care in a brand new facility. "I had my vitals taken every two hours and saw a physician every four hours," she said. "The CDU was very private but provided access to the ultrasound and X-rays I needed. I got tremendous care, and the nursing staff was just incredible." After two days of observation, Ms. Sullivan was on the mend. Her condition, diagnosed as pneumonia, was under control, and she was not facing any other health complications. "The whole team worked well together to manage my after-care as well," Ms. Sullivan said. "They called my primary care physician and made an appointment for me to make sure everything was okay." Wholly Healed Today, Ms. Sullivan is enjoying an active lifestyle, including swimming and boating on Long Island Sound and hot yoga classes in Locust Valley. "The CDU is a great option for people like me who are too sick to go home but would rather avoid the long stay and cost of being admitted to the hospital if they can avoid it," Ms. Sullivan said. "Rather than being forced to make an either/or choice, people can use the CDU as a bridge place with great beds and a caring staff." The Clinical Decision Unit enhances care by monitoring patients longer in the Emergency Department, then safely transitioning them back to the community, where their care plans can be followed in an environment that better meets their needs. — Brad Sherman, MD, medical director and chair of medicine at Glen Cove Hospital A Good Decision When Bayville native Jacqueline Sullivan needed emergency services, she came to Glen Cove Hospital and encountered a new level of care in the Clinical Decision Unit.
